After taking the kids to Hampshire Hills this morning, we decided to head down to Nashua to eat at the Pheasant Lane mall's food court for lunch. We did a little bit o' shopping afterwards.

Daniel got some Lindt chocolate, Claire Bear got some shoes for work, Timothy got a beefier power supply for his Raspberry Pi, and I picked up this t-shirt for upcoming workouts. I was briefly tempted at the Apple Store, but resisted. ;-) Timothy & I joked about picking up their Magic Trackpad and hooking it up to his 'Pi'. The trackpad would cost twice as much as the computer itself !!

When we got back I did a lot of chopping away at the ice in our driveway. Claire laughed when I announced what I was going to do. She thought I was using an ethnic accent to say "shopping". Afterwards I got to nap for the first time in months. I miss Saturday naps. Claire Bear & I worked together on reusing the leftover pulled pork to make enchiladas for dinner. A nice change from the usual beef or chicken enchiladas!

Eventually Abita came home from the Fast she participated in with St. John Neumann's youth group. I set her 'n Claire Bear up with Crazy, Stupid, Love while Tim & I tinkered upstairs. Considering tonight's time shift, it's time to wrap up.

Click to learn more about the Herbst Appliance

Click to learn more about the Herbst Appliance

I had to skip Mass yesterday morning because the Twins had a long orthodontist appointment. They've had a Herbst appliance in their mouths since the beginning of the school year, but so far had avoided the arms, the 'struts' as I like to call them.

Michael's hardware had developed a crack in it, so they took off some of the appliance, took new molds of his mouth, and another appliance will be installed in about four weeks. So for now Michael has less hardware in his mouth.

On the other hand Daniel has more. They put the arms in yesterday. While not as obnoxious as the old head gear many of older folks had if we were teens with braces, they do limit how much you can/should open your mouth. Daniel finds that really annoying. Once in the middle of his day he had to re-connect the arms.

Because the appointment ran so long I skipped heading to the office and worked the day from home. The boys and I had CCD at 6:30pm and when we got home, I took half of the pulled pork I'd been slow cooking all day and made BBQ sandwiches. I'm hoping to use the rest of the meat tonight for enchiladas.

Today was a typical Wednesday. Morning Mass and the Wednesday coffee & fellowship afterwards. I drove down to the office stopping by Gourmet Donuts in Townsend. When I pulled up I saw an old friend/coworker from the days when I worked at ATI. He became a VW TDI convert about a year or two after me and was driving yet another new model. He saw my Beetle TDI and asked about how it was doing.

Finally! Success with my smoked sausage gumbo recipe today. This is probably my fourth or fifth time making it since last summer, but I think I'm getting improvement in each iteration. This time 'twas not too bland, not nuclear hot. I gave Timothy instructions to stir in the rice only in the last hour so that it wouldn't turn into mush. I cooked just enough such that there were no leftovers. And thanks to Claire Bear's Christmas gift of crockpot liners, cleanup was super quick.

As I was eating dinner and catching up with the boys, I quickly checked my messages. Tonight's Lector Meeting was postponed to next week. Tomorrow's CCD class is cancelled as is Abby's Youth Band practice. Qualcomm New England said that their offices are closed tomorrow, but I still have to work from home or take a vacation day. And of course Milford Schools are closed tomorrow. Hopefully the Superintendent doesn't robo-dial me at 5am to remind me.

So for a change tonight I get to sit by our roaring fire, sipping some hot drinks, watching an episode of "Top Gear" with my boys. <<insert manly grunt here>>

Now if everyone can just stay healthy and we can maintain our utilities (electricity, internet, etc), that would be awesome.

I felt so bad for the kids this afternoon. I let them sleep in. In the interest of getting the grocery shopping done before the afternoon and avoiding the pre-Patriots game rush, we skipped having our traditional Sunday breakfast at Donut Fresh Express with a promise of lunch once groceries were unpacked.

CBear and I brought everything back and together with Abita and Timbo we got everything unloaded. We decided that at 1 o'clock we would go to Chili's in Nashua and from there over to the Nashua Conway Arena for ice skating. Everyone got their stuff together. We were about to load into the van and I opened the garage door.

  Perfect black ice conditions

What a difference that hour made! When CBear and I came home from Mahket Basket, the roads were dry. Now suddenly they were... shiny. And not just wet shiny. I stepped out to judge the driveway. It was slick ice underneath rain.

Earlier in the day I had already broken the news to them that the dinner at a friend's house was cancelled because of an illness there. Now I had to tell them that we can't safely leave the house.

We improvised some last minute lunches. CBear and I tried to make something of the afternoon by watching Roman Holiday. It was amusing watching the opening credits: "and introducing Audrey Hepburn". The twins played some video games. But Timbo found the movie "boring". Yes, sorry buddy. It's not as exciting as Top Gear or Doctor Who.

After the movie CBear helped Timbo get out of his funk by bringing out pastels for them to work with. Perhaps we'll have a Just Dance marathon later. I just pray that this ice doesn't build up and cause power outages. After the movie this afternoon I did a quick scan of Teh Bookface and saw numerous incidents reported locally. I believe skipping the trip to Nashua was probably a good idea.
